Meeting announcement 2nd Circular 3rd International A-Train Symposium 2017

The 705-km Afternoon (A-Train) Satellite Constellation brings together a rich array of instruments to better understand Earth’s changing climate and environment. The 3rd International Symposium on the A-Train Satellite Constellation is an opportunity to learn more about the evolving capabilities of the A-Train system, and to engage other colleagues with similar interests.

Since the launch of the A-Train’s first satellite member in 2002, combined measurements from the A-Train instruments have enabled interdisciplinary studies that have significantly advanced our understanding of many complex and interacting processes occurring in the atmosphere and ocean, and on land. The unprecedented scope of its growing collection of measurements has also been a valuable resource for validating and improving climate, weather and other environmental models.

This Symposium follows and expands on the first two A-Train Symposia held in Lille, France in 2007 and in New Orleans, LA, USA in 2010. It will provide a forum to exchange information on the latest scientific advancements using multi-sensor measurements from the A-Train, and is structured along four major themes:

• Atmospheric composition and chemistry
• Aerosols, clouds, radiation, and the hydrological cycle
• Atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial components of the carbon cycle
• Weather and other operational applications

In the interest of expanding on these main themes, we welcome abstracts for a special session devoted to scientific advancements realized by other constellations and A-Train-like synergistic methods, as well as future constellation concepts and opportunities.

The symposium will consist of two parts:

• A one-day off-site workshop on April 18, 2017 focusing on instrument data products and their use, and
• A three-day symposium (April 19-21, 2017) emphasizing science capabilities and advancements realized through the A-Train multi-sensor system. This portion of the meeting will include invited speakers for a general plenary session each morning, and afternoon sessions separated into the four theme areas for focused oral presentations on data fusion and science analysis. A general poster session will also be held late each afternoon in the Pasadena Convention Center’s main ballroom.

This is an open symposium, and since opportunities for afternoon oral presentations will be very limited, prospective participants are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts for poster presentations. These posters will be displayed for the duration of the meeting. Travel assistance for a limited number of undergraduate and graduate students is also available.

The meeting is hosted by NASA and JPL and will take place at the Pasadena Convention Center – a few steps away from world-renowned dining and entertainment venues, and historical Old Town Pasadena. There is no registration fee to attend. The deadline for abstract submissions is December 16, 2016. A large block of hotel rooms at nearby hotels are available at a group rate for the symposium and can be reserved through the A-Train registration site until March 26, 2017.
